Kyoto University On-site Laboratory and SATREPS – Compound Disaster Risk Reduction associated with Large Earthquakes and Tsunamis joint symposium

The Kyoto University International Research Laboratory for Earthquake and Tsunami Risk Cognition and Reduction (On-site Laboratory) and SATREPS Compound Disaster Risk Reduction associated with Large Earthquakes and Tsunamis held a joint symposium on July 30.
The opening ceremony was attended by Professor Yasuyuki Kono, Vice-President for International Strategy at Kyoto University, who highlighted international collaboration through the On-site laboratories and the SATREPS project.
The Honorable Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Mexican States, Melba Pría, highlighted the work of Kyoto University as an ally in disaster risk reduction, as well as the importance of these projects not only for generating scientific knowledge, but also for their benefits in safeguarding lives and empowering communities.
The Honorable Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of El Salvador, Diego Alejandro Dalton Rosales, mentioned that this inter-institutional scientific collaboration has not only enabled advances in technical capabilities but has also contributed to shaping the regional vision for integrating early warning systems, education, and community participation.

Professor Tomoharu Hori, Director of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute at Kyoto University, outlined the long-standing research collaboration between Mexico and Japan, and more recently with El Salvador. Professor Hori stated that with these projects, research exchanges, and practitioner activities related to disaster prevention among the three countries are entering a new stage, and this symposium facilitated enhanced collaboration among Japan, Mexico, and El Salvador.

After the opening ceremony, researchers from various institutions in Japan, Mexico, and El Salvador presented the progress made in the three working groups and outlined future actions to be taken as part of this large-scale project.
