Students from the University of El Salvador visited iLETs (Kyoto)

From July 28 to August 5, 2025, two students from the University of El Salvador stayed at iLETs in Kyoto. Under the guidance of Associate Professor Tomoaki Nishikawa, they worked on earthquake phase picking and hypocenter determination using machine learning techniques.

During their stay, the students received training on the latest machine-learning-based seismic waveform analysis software PhaseNet, as well as the hypocenter determination program hypomh. They applied these tools to determine the hypocenters of aftershocks following the major earthquake that occurred offshore El Salvador on May 30, 2019.

One of the students will remain in Kyoto until the end of October to further develop this research as part of their undergraduate thesis.
